The Dissemination of the Nyckelharpa: The Ethnic and Non-ethnic Ways
Abstract
Gunnar Ternhag & Mathias Boström
Many musical instruments are strongly linked to ethnic concepts. In this
article we present and discuss two approaches for picking up the Swedish
nyckelharpa (keyed fiddle): the ethnic and non-ethnic approach.
The study of non-Swedish musicians shows vast differences in ways of
looking upon and developing the nyckelharpa, as well as ways of playing
and the type of music played. These differences can, to a lagre extent,
be explained by these approaches.
