Svensk tidskrift för musikforskning started out as a scholarly journal published by Svenska samfundet för musikforskning in 1919. Between 1919 and 2013 the journal was primarily in printed format. Around 2005 a process of digitalization of the old material was initiated for Svensk tidskrift för musikforskning. In September 2021 the content of the printed journals 1919-2013 was made accessible on the web, together with the purely electronic volume 2014/1.
The official English name was Swedish Journal of Musicology.
In 2014 Svensk tidskrift för musikforskning merged with STM-online, under the new name constellation Svensk tidskrift för musikforskning/Swedish Journal of Music Research/STM-SJM. STM-SJM follows a continuous publication model, but is also collected in printed volumes, so far on a yearly basis.
