Svensk tidskrift för musikforskning started out as a scholarly journal published by Svenska samfundet för musikforskning in 1919. Between 1919 and 2013 the journal was published only in printed format, but in 1998 a parallel journal was launched under the name of STM–online. Around 2005 a process of digitization of earlier volumes of Svensk tidskrift för musikforskning was initiated. In September 2021 the content of the printed journals 1919-2013 was made accessible on the web, together with the purely electronic volume 2014/1.

In 2014 Svensk tidskrift för musikforskning merged with STM-online, under the new, bilingual name Svensk tidskrift för musikforskning/Swedish Journal of Music Research (abbrev.STM-SJM). STM-SJM applies a model of continuous online publication for articles and book reviews, but the material is also collected in printed volumes on a yearly basis.
